Camping with your pup can be one of the most rewarding experiences filled with fresh air, exploration, and plenty of bonding time. But, to make sure the trip goes smoothly for both you and your furry friend, it’s important to do some prep work. Here’s a guide with some fun, practical tips for making the most of your next camping adventure with your pup!
1. Choose a Dog-Friendly Campsite/Campground
Not all campsites welcome dogs, so make sure to pick one that does! Look for dog-friendly parks and campgrounds with plenty of space for walks, dog-approved trails, and maybe even a swimming spot for dogs who love to splash around. National and state parks often have specific dog-friendly zones. Do your research!
2. Pack a Doggy Camping Kit
Your pup needs to pack too! Essentials include:
- Collapsible food and water bowls: Lightweight and easy to pack.
- Plenty of food: Your dog might need extra energy for all the outdoor adventures, so be sure to pack plenty of food and nutrient-rich treats!
- Dog bed or blanket: Choose something familiar from home that will make them feel comfortable!
- Towels: If you’re camping, you’re probably getting dirty! Pack some towels for muddy paws or a quick dip in a stream.
- Poop bags: Leave no trace applies to your dog too! (click here to view our compostable poop bags!)
- Booties or paw balm: Be sure you’re protecting their paws from rough terrain or hot surfaces!
- List of local Vets: Be sure you know - and have the number of - a local vet just in case you need it!
3. Leash Up and Explore Safely
Even the most trained pups can get excited by all the new smells and sounds of nature. Bring a long leash or a tie-out that allows them to explore while keeping them safe. We recommend our hands-free leash for hiking and outdoor adventures!
Safety Tip: Make sure your dog’s collar has up-to-date tags with your contact info, just in case they wander a bit too far!
4. Bring a Cozy Vest for Chilly Mornings and Evenings
Those early mornings and late evenings can get chilly in the great outdoors. One way to keep your dog comfortable is by packing a cozy vest. We recommend our Reversible Teddy Vests! They feature soft fleece on one side for cozy insulation and fun patterns on the other side, perfect for those brisk morning walks! Plus it has a zipped pocket to hold extra treats or a poop bag!
Added benefit:, an extra layer of protection against morning dew or unexpected light rain!
5. Safety First!
Just like you, your dog can get a scrape or a tick while adventuring in the wild. Bring along a dog-specific first aid kit with essentials like tweezers for tick removal, antiseptic wipes, and bandages. You can never be too prepared, especially when it comes to your pup!
6. Bring a Harness for Adventures
When you're exploring trails with your pup, a good harness is essential. Not only does it give you more control during hikes, but it’s also safer for your pup, especially on steep or uneven terrain. A well-fitting harness prevents strain on your dog’s neck and allows for better movement, ensuring your pup stays comfortable and secure during your outdoor adventures!
We recommend our No-Pull Harness! These harnesses provide extra stability with two leash attachment points, making them perfect for pups who love to explore. Just like our other gear, these harnesses have been designed with the on-the-go pup in mind. Our No-Pull Harnesses are made of our signature water-resistant neoprene and include extra padding and interior breathable mesh for ultimate flexibility and comfort. Plus you can adjust the neck and chest straps to find the perfect fit!
7. Keep Your Pup Hydrated
Between all the hiking, sniffing, and running around your dog will need plenty of water. Make sure they have access to fresh water throughout the day to keep them hydrated.
Fun Tip: Bring a portable water bottle with an attached drinking spout. That way your dog can drink on the go!
8. Have Fun and Make Memories!
Camping with your dog is all about having fun. Capture moments of your dog rolling in the grass, splashing in a creek, or watching the sunset with you by the campfire. These are the memories you’ll cherish forever!
Bonus: Bring a camera (or use your phone) to snap some adorable photos to document your memories!
